If you’ve just arrived in Australia — or you’re planning a long stay for working holiday (WHV), study, or travel — the Wise card is almost unavoidable.
I recently completed the full Wise setup myself, from registration to daily use, and the whole process was surprisingly smooth. No major issues, no unnecessary back-and-forth. This article is a from-zero-to-usable walkthrough, based entirely on real experience, to help you avoid common mistakes and save time.
How to Open a Wise Account in Australia
1. Download Wise (App or Web)
You can register in two ways:
Option 1:
Search “Wise” in the App Store or Google Play and download the official app.
Option 2:
Register via browser using this link:

Using an invite link usually waives the physical card delivery fee, which is a nice bonus.
2. Create Your Wise Account (Important Details)
- Open the app and tap “Sign up for free”
- Enter your email and set a password
- Select Australia as your country of residence
- Fill in your Australian address
- Rental address, hostel, or Airbnb is fine
- As long as you can receive mail
- Enter your personal details
⚠️ Your name must match your passport exactly
Same spelling, same order, same spacing.
3. Identity Verification (Most Important Step)
Wise’s verification is strict but fair. Follow the instructions and it usually passes without issues.
You’ll need:
- Select Mainland China as document country (if applicable)
- Upload your passport photo page
- Record a short facial verification video
- Upload Australian address proof
Accepted address documents include:
- Rental agreement
- Utility bill
- Bank letter
- Any official letter with your name and address
If you don’t have documents yet, you can wait for the Wise physical card letter and use that as proof.
4. Order the Physical Card (Highly Recommended)
Once verified:
- Go to Card in the app
- Tap “Order a card”
- Pay the card fee (often free with invite link)
- Confirm delivery address
- Submit and wait
📮 Delivery usually takes 5–10 business days.
5. Virtual Card: Use It Immediately
You don’t need to wait for the physical card.
- Wise generates a Virtual Card once approved
- Can be added to Apple Pay / Google Pay
- Works for online shopping, bookings, subscriptions, flights, hotels
This is extremely useful during your first days in Australia.
6. Adding Money to Wise (Best Options Ranked)
Best option: Local Australian bank transfer
- Use Wise’s BSB + Account Number
- Transfer AUD from an Australian bank
- Very low or zero fees
International transfer from China
- RMB to Wise international account
- Automatic currency conversion
- Much cheaper than traditional banks
Debit/Credit card top-up
- Convenient
- Higher fees, not recommended long-term
7. Activate the Physical Card
When your card arrives:
- Open the app → Card → Activate card
- Enter the CVV on the back
- Set your PIN for ATM withdrawals
At this point, your Wise account is fully operational.

Final Thoughts
Wise is the lubricant of cross-border life.
Local banks are the backbone of local life.
Using both together is the most flexible and cost-effective setup I’ve found in Australia.
If you’re a:
- WHV holder
- International student
- New arrival in Australia
Wise can easily cover your early-stage payments, transfers, and daily spending — without needing a TFN or credit history.
